Question: How often does a shepherd have contact with his family?
Answer: When the rancher brings him his mail. It takes a week and a half or more for mail to reach family in Chile or Peru or to come from them.

Question: Do shepherds get vacations?
Answer:They generally come on three year contracts. Generally they get to return home after September or October of their second year and must be back in March in time for shearing.
